AI = LOVE (Japanese symbol)

Abdullah Ibrahim is a martial artist. I witnessed him summon his internal energies and shake them through his entire body in a frenetic jigger. This was at a music workshop at his music (M7) school in District Six. This old building with wooden floors is the last in a rectangular piece of land stretching across the foot of the table mountain. At sunset the sun drops into Camps Bay. Its final rays run down the kloof passing between Tale Mountain and Lions Head and set perfectly on a proud sunflower in a rather desolate gravel and soil parking lot adjoining the M7 building. Thisplace is blessed and it is therefore fitting to have the privalege of learning the AI philosophy of life. And that is the fountain of inspiration. Intention he maintains is all important. The M's in M7 stand for disciplines across the board including Meditations, Meals, Martial Arts and Music. A I advises his students to read the art of war and he quotes Rumi at will. Only once was A I upstaged and that was during his welcome home from exile concert at Wits. There was a moment when the music left his body and his imagination. At that moment AI found himself playing extraordinarily beautiful music tat he had not expected to be playing. As this wave of music faded so AI searched the room to see Nelson Mandela enter in the upstairs gallery. Such is the effect of this music.
