...recordings from a 1959 four-month field project capturing vocal and instrumental (including dances and dance ceremonies) ... collected in 23 villages, towns and cities along the Mediterranean and Atlantic Coasts, in the Sahara to Segangan in the Rif country and inland through the middle and grand atlas. Berber and Arab music predominates, there are traces of the antique Andalusian style. Note too the Essaouira Jewish music and rare zama reed instrument. Paul Bowles is the author of "The Rif, to Music." in "Their heads are green and their hands are blue." RANDOM HOUSE 1957
